Every year, the Aiphone team travels to New York City to show our latest and greatest at ISC East, but more importantly, to pay homage to the place where access control and intercoms became a staple in people’s lives.

More than half of New York’s population lives in multi-family buildings, making the city a place where new ideas and innovations in our industry are put to the test, proving their ability to keep up with a city that never slows down.

The Beginning of Access Control

In the early days of New York City apartment living, and urban life in general, building access was simple. Many of the first multi-tenant buildings relied on little more than trust and, occasionally, a mechanical lock. Security was personal and convenience came from familiarity. But as cities grew denser and buildings taller, that sense of familiarity faded. Suddenly, knowing who was at the door mattered.

The need to balance safety, convenience, and connection gave rise to one of the most enduring devices in modern architecture: the intercom. Of course, I say with a slight bias, that the intercom is the most secure and convenient way to control access to a multi-tenant building.

The Sound that Started the Industry

The earliest systems were nothing more than buzzers and electric strikes, simple things that allowed residents to unlock a door from upstairs. Yet in fast-moving cities, that buzz became iconic. It was the sound of a visitor arriving, a delivery, or a loved one at the front door.

How many classic moments in Seinfeld began with that unmistakable buzz and an “Hey! It’s me!” setting up the chaos of another perfectly written episode? That familiar sound became part of city life itself, a symbol of connection and convenience long before smartphones or smart locks ever existed. The intercom wasn’t just hardware: it was part of the culture of apartment living, woven into everyday life.

The Challenge of Urban Density

By the time Aiphone entered the U.S. market in 1970, that sound had evolved into clear, dependable two-way communication. Our VA Series introduced reliable, audio-only intercoms for apartments and condominiums, many of which still serve residents today. Those systems set a new standard for quality and simplicity, especially in high-density environments where daily communication was constant.

As expectations rose, so did technology. In the mid-1980s, Aiphone brought video capability to multi-tenant intercoms with the VB Series, letting residents see who was calling before unlocking the door. This visual connection redefined what “secure” means. It isn’t just about access; it’s about assurance. The ability to confirm a face through a small screen added confidence to every interaction, and it quickly became an essential feature for properties prioritizing resident safety and peace of mind.

Shifting from Security to Experience

That was also when security became an amenity. An expectation that extended beyond luxury buildings and staffed lobbies. Video intercoms gave every tenant the ability to control their environment with confidence. It was the start of a cultural shift that helped access control become personal.

The 2000s bring us to the GT Series, the most popular and recognizable multi-tenant intercom in North America and the world. It has received several major upgrades over the years, evolving from the black and white screens of the GF to the modern high-definition color options of the GT, keeping it a staple for affordable and retrofit-friendly applications. In fact, you can’t walk half a city block in New York without seeing one installed.

The GT Series helped define what reliability and longevity mean in intercom and access control. It bridged the analog past and digital future with features like telephone-dialing adapters and simple mobile apps, giving property owners a trusted solution that continues to serve hundreds of thousands of residents across the world. The GT Series embodies Aiphone’s philosophy to make technology that lasts, grows, and adapts to new environments. To us, the best systems are those that age gracefully alongside the buildings they protect.

How Cloud Platform Transforms Multi-Tenant Management

Today, building access has entered a new phase defined by IP connectivity and cloud management. Our IX | IXG Series represents the culmination of more than five decades of innovation, combining the reliability of our analog heritage with the flexibility of modern technology.

The IXG platform supports mobile apps, QR code entry, and integrated access control, giving property managers and integrators the ability to configure, monitor, and update systems from anywhere. It delivers the kind of operational insight and remote efficiency required in a modern multi-tenant solution.

And while new construction projects continue to embrace IP systems, not every building needs to start from scratch. For retrofit situations, the GT Series remains a trusted, modern analog solution that’s ideal for leveraging existing wiring while delivering contemporary functionality. Proving that innovation can enhance what’s already built rather than replace it outright.

Looking ahead, AiphoneCloud is enabling the next evolution in multi-tenant management at Aiphone. It is creating a foundation for deeper integration with property management platforms, unlocking new efficiencies and convenience for customers. Meanwhile, it is providing us with the opportunity to build streamlined, in-platform tools for those who prefer a simpler, unified solution. I look forward to sharing our roadmap for this platform next year to go into greater detail on all these exciting innovations.

The Evolution Continues

As security professionals gather once again in New York City, the conversation around intelligent access feels especially fitting. The same city that once popularized the apartment buzzer now leads the way in adopting cloud-connected intercoms and integrated access systems.

For over 50 years, Aiphone has helped shape the evolution of intercom systems in North America in every way. From the earliest audio systems to today’s networked and cloud-managed platforms that unify communication, convenience, and control. It’s a journey that connects generations of technology, from the buzzers immortalized in sitcoms to intelligent access systems redefining modern property management.

And as we showcase our latest innovations at ISC East this year, we remain guided by the same simple goal: to make every interaction at the front door as secure, seamless, and human as it can be so that everyone can have their own, “Hey! It’s me!” moment.
