Butte Central High School to improve security system

BUTTE, Mont. — Butte Central High School administrators say they’re working on new security features to keep their students safer.

It was one of the topic’s discussed during Thursday night’s State of Events meeting.

"It's phenomenal how much money is going into our school safety,” said Principal JP Williams.

Williams tells NBC Montana they’re working on replacing all their wooden doors with metal ones. There will also be smaller windows on the doors, adding more privacy to the building.

The new security upgrades will cost about $150,000. The funding will come from the school’s improvement building budget, which is about $500,000.

Some of the students say the new changes make them feel safer at school.

"They can't see as much into the school with just the little windows, because the old doors were just glass, so they were probably a lot easier to break through,” said sophomore Ian Williams.

"People can't be looking in all the time, and it's just a weight lifted off my chest that I don't have to worry about it anymore,” said Aryana Rodrigues, a senior.

"It just makes me feel better at school knowing that I'm safe, and nothing's going to happen,” said Bella Sorini, who is also a senior.

Williams says their goal was to have the main entrance camera installed by May, so they're ahead of schedule.

"These children have to feel safe, and we believe that these improvements we're making are going to allow children focus on their academic excellence instead of being worried,” Williams said.
