Protecting the Campus: An Aiphone eBook

By Dana Pruiett

More than 110 students, teachers, staff or administrators have been killed on U.S. campuses in the past five years. There are many more reports of assault, theft, vandalism, and other crimes. Protecting children, young adults or valuable assets on a K-12, college or university campus is one of the biggest challenges facing administrators.

Yet security isn’t typically part of the curriculum at education schools. Most of what administrators learn comes through on-the-job training. Aiphone is looking to make that process a little easier with a free 31-page eBook, “Best Practices for Keeping Students Safe: A Guide to Campus Security.”

Sections of the eBook look at everyday occurrences such as theft and vandalism as well as every administrator’s worst nightmare – an active shooter. The eBook includes interactive checklists to help prepare for a new security project and for finding the right security integrator.

There’s information about determining the total cost of ownership of new projects; the need to properly maintain equipment; ways to share security costs among multiple campus departments; and the use of environmental design to heighten security. Quick safety tips are scattered throughout the book and there are lists of resources for finding additional security information.

The eBook is based on knowledge from internal and external experts with decades of combined campus security experience. The information focuses on proven best practices delivered in a convenient and sensible manner.

This was a natural step for Aiphone which has played an integral part in campus security efforts for many years. Our teams have worked closely with administrators, law enforcement, integrators and others involved in protecting students.
